Info for Breweries

Why are we doing this? Bart Watson, the chief economist for the Brewers Association, constantly studies data and consumer trends. When he speaks, people listen. Many times over the past year he has noted that craft beer’s success is related to the idea of creating new occasions for beer drinkers. Hop Mob is an occasion. It is an opportunity to tell people, “Come here and/or drink this.”

If your brewery wants to participate in Washington Hop Mob this upcoming February, please email me (Kendall Jones) at kjones@washingtonbeerblog.com. Please include the words Hop Mob in the subject line of the email. Please notify me ASAP so we can update this website.

Along with a basic heads-up that you’re brewing a beer, include any info about the beer: beer name and description, as well as any info about its availability (growlers, crowlers, cans, etc). This info can be updated with details later as your plans come together, but most important is getting you on the list of participating breweries.

Any beer in the Hop Mob should feature a complete expression of hop character. It’s no longer required to be a Triple IPA, though you are welcome to brew one of those beasts if you so choose. The goal is to show off the bounty of hops in their fullest, in whatever way you feel fit.

We will promote Hop Mob and the beers to the best of our abilities, encouraging bars and retailers to support the mission, but we cannot make any promises about beer sales.

What is a Hop Mob Beer?

Any style of beer is welcome as long as it meets the basic criteria below.

  • Designed and created for Hop Mob. Not an existing beer or recipe that otherwise meets the criteria.
  • A beer featuring a complete expression of hop character.
  • Minimum of 50 IBU, or an equivalent perceived hoppiness.
  • Any style of beer is acceptable.
  • Ready for consumption on February 10, 2023 (when Hop Mob kicks off).

What does participating in Hop Mob mean?

  • It means that you’ve stepped up to make beers for this occasion.
  • Participating bars can get your beer for their Hop Mob events. They will be notified that you’re brewing a Hop Mob beer, but they’re under no obligation to take your beer just because you’ve brewed one.
  • Your Hop Mob beer will not be available either in your tasting room or at other accounts before the first event on February 20.
  • You’ll be listed on the website as one of the participating breweries. This can include a beer description if you choose.
  • We will leverage the promotional power of the Washington Beer Blog and the Washington Beer Commission, including our sizeable social media channels, to promote the website, the program, and each event.

Note that we do not guarantee any sales. It is entirely up to the participating bars to decide which beers they want to purchase for their Hop Mob event. We will make sure you know which bars are having events and we will make sure the participating bars know which breweries are making Hop Mob beers.

The goal of Washington Hop Mob is to promote Washington breweries by showcasing beers that celebrate hops. Washington Hop Mob is organized by Kendall Jones of the Washington Beer Blog, Nat Pellman of Brouwer’s Café, and Adam Robbings of Reuben’s Brews. This team was established to provide a voice from each of the three elements of Hop Mob: promotions, events, and breweries.
